Exciting news: Glomar Offshore is raising the bar for sustainability by committing to HVO40 on a fixed basis, building on last year’s success with GoodFuels HVO30. This strengthens their partnership with FincoEnergies and sets a new standard for greener maritime operations. Here’s the inside story of this inspiring collaboration.

Sustainability Journey

Glomar is on a bold mission to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% by 2031. By cutting fossil fuel use by 10% annually and replacing it with sustainable HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), the family owned company is leading the charge toward a greener future. But there’s more, says Melvin Weij, COO at Glomar Offshore. Beyond fuel transition, Weij highlights Glomar’s continuous efforts to optimise energy efficiency across its operations, including office spaces.

We’re active in sustainability initiatives across Europe, from switching to LED lighting and optimising climate control systems to reducing company cars. We also keep investing in greener solutions, like upgrading our fleet with more efficient ships.”

As an offshore charterer, Glomar supports a sustainable future by advancing key Sustainable Development Goals, including backing offshore wind and renewable energy projects. That’s where FincoEnergiescomes in. GoodFuels HVO is made entirely from certified waste and residue feedstock, ensuring true sustainability. It can reduce carbon emissions up to 89%. In addition, it’s is a drop-in fuel: it can be used directly without having to make changes to the fuel infrastructure.

“By adopting GoodFuels HVO, Glomar drives clean energy progress while setting a new sustainability standard for the industry. Also, it doesn’t require engine modifications – a big win for us.”

Positive results

Here’s how it all started. A few years ago, Glomar began its sustainability journey by adopting FincoEnergiesChangeXL additive, which helped reduce a massive 1,006,892 kg of CO2 emissions in 2023 alone. Following that, the offshore services provider made a major leap toward sustainability by transitioning from traditional marine fuels to GoodFuels HVO30, as Weijpoints out.

“We successfully delivered this sustainable alternative to fossil fuels in January 2024, which led to a 28% reduction in CO2 emissions. And with our commitment to HVO40, we’re expecting even better results in 2025.”

Challenges

Being a frontrunner comes with its challenges. Evolving regulations are raising the bar, demanding stricter sustainability standards, transparent sourcing, and comprehensive reporting. With the EU’s CSRD and Due Diligence Directive set for 2026, businesses must prepare for increased accountability in emission reductions and supply chain management.

“Navigating the options can be overwhelming. Where do you start? For us, the answer was simple: collaboration. We partnered with FincoEnergies, whose experts provide the knowledge and support needed to overcome challenges, big and small.”

Another challenge is product availability, as energy markets face price fluctuations and supply uncertainties. FincoEnergies ensures supply security by maintaining higher stocks and absorbing financial risks, with customer service always remaining a top priority.

Added value

According to Weij, working with an experienced decarbonisation partner in the maritime industry has really made a difference in reaching Glomar’s sustainability objectives.

“FincoEnergies understands our energy needs in the maritime industry, guiding us with technical advice and navigating evolving regulations. Also, we see great potential with the extensive GoodFuels portfolio, which offers so many opportunities. This partnership drives innovation, enhances environmental practices, and supports sustainable development in offshore industries.”

In the long term

The transition to GoodFuels HVO40 represents a major milestone in Glomar's ongoing sustainability journey. With this commitment, says Weij, Glomar is taking a decisive step towards reducing their environmental footprint and working towards a greener future.

“To meet our ambitious targets, we are steadily increasing the percentage of HVO fuel in our fleet, with the goal of completely eliminating fossil fuel usage by 2030. FincoEnergies’ expertise and insight play a crucial role in guiding Glomar as we continue to explore new, innovative initiatives within the market.”

Advice

Having come this far, Weij advises companies starting their sustainability journey to define clear goals, assess their environmental impact, adopt energy-efficient practices, and replace fossil fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives

“But most importantly, find yourself a trusted partner committed to helping you navigate challenges. With FincoEnergies, Glomar is leading the transition to a greener economy, working together for a lasting, sustainable impact.”
