FincoEnergies has today announced the launch of Biofuel Swap - a new proposition which will help fuel companies on the road to reduce their emissions while contributing to a more sustainable European road sector.

Facing increasing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures, transportation and logistics companies are seeking to reduce their emissions by transitioning to sustainable fuels, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

However, these businesses often encounter challenges, including limited HVO availability along key routes in Europe. Additionally, it is also often unclear what feedstock was used for HVO production, which makes it hard for companies to accurately measure and control their sustainability impact.

Recognising these challenges, FincoEnergies has launched Biofuel Swap as a solution to help companies that cannot directly fuel HVO into their vehicles to significantly reduce their emissions.

Biofuel Swap not only accelerates the energy transition within the transport sector but also enhances operational flexibility.

First, an agreement on the volume and price of HVO is established, which is then blended into FincoEnergies' Dutch fuel road network on a specified date or period.

The integrity of this system is maintained through rigorous audits conducted by an external auditor, confirming that the HVO has been correctly added to the network, and that emissions reductions are allocated appropriately and with strict avoidance of double-counting.

"Biofuel Swap represents a significant advancement for the European transport sector." - Jim Looise, Commercial Manager at FincoEnergies.

After the audit has been conducted, companies receive a verified certificate from FincoEnergies, confirming the addition of HVO to the network. The certificate will be shared with users as evidence for the purchase and will enable companies to attribute this HVO100 to their company usage.

Jim Looise, Commercial Manager at FincoEnergies, said: “Biofuel Swap represents a significant advancement for the European transport sector. This solution is designed for companies that cannot directly utilise our HVO product. It's not just for trucking and logistics companies; lease agencies, company fleets, and fuel card providers can also benefit from this innovative solution, driving emission reductions across the entire sector. As part of this solution, companies can get practical advice on how to claim the GHG reductions based on their purchase."

Biofuel Swap’s launch comes after a successful pilot phase with PostNL held in the summer of 2023. PostNL integrated 25,000 litres of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) into their business through Biofuel Swap’s network. The pilot generated a reduction of about 70 tons of CO2e emissions.

"FincoEnergies Biofuel Swap Solution allows us to achieve significant emission reductions by enabling the injection of the HVO100 into the fuel network, based on the liters needed for the kilometers traveled by our international road transport." - Rutger Vonk, ESG Programme Manager at Spring GDS, part of PostNL Group

Sophia Carrillo Beeck, Commercial Manager at GoodShipping, added:We are proud to have provided PostNL with an innovative solution that solves the challenge of limited HVO availability across European roads, while supporting their ambition to achieve cleaner and more sustainable road transport.”

The success of the pilot resulted in a follow-up project for 2024, involving a much larger volume of 2,000,000 litres of HVO100, which is part of their plan to cover all their international road transport in Europe with HVO100. Moreover this highlights PostNL's long-term commitment to further reducing their environmental impact.

Rutger Vonk, ESG Programme Manager at Spring GDS, part of PostNL Group, said: "FincoEnergies Biofuel Swap Solution allows us to achieve significant emission reductions by enabling the injection of the HVO100 into the fuel network, based on the liters needed for the kilometers traveled by our international road transport. This delivers the same reduction results as if our trucks were fully powered by HVO100."

FincoEnergies’ ambition lies in expanding its Biofuel Swap solution to its existing customer base to help them further decarbonise their transportation operations. Additionally, FincoEnergies intends to offer this proposition to new customers across Europe.
