Biofuel Swap: A game-changer for efficient sustainable transport

If you run a transport company with trucks and other vehicles on the road every day, you know that sustainability can be challenging. Due to increasing environmental regulations and concerns about the climate, transport and logistics companies need to find ways to reduce their emissions.

Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) is a sustainable fuel that can make a real difference, but it's not always accessible - especially along major European routes. On top of that, the origin of feedstocks is often unclear, making it hard to measure its sustainability impact accurately.

To support our customers as much as possible on their sustainability journey, FincoEnergies has developed a smart solution: Biofuel Swap.

Biofuel Swap: what is it?

With Biofuel Swap, FincoEnergies offers an innovative method for transport companies to reduce their emissions, even if they do not yet have direct access to HVO100. Moreover, we know exactly where our product's raw materials come from. This offers certainty.

Jim Looise (48) states that Biofuel Swap is a groundbreaking solution for the European transport sector. And he should know; for almost four years, he has been intensively involved in everything related to HVO as Commercial Manager Road at FincoEnergies.

"Biofuel Swap is a major step forward. It has been launched specifically for companies that cannot yet use our HVO fuel. If they opt for Biofuel Swap, they will not only reduce their CO2 emissions, but also receive practical advice on how to implement these savings."

As you have come to expect from us, FincoEnergies actively thinks along with its customers. We offer support in achieving their sustainability goals.

Biofuel Swap: how does it work?

The process is straightforward and effective. With guidance from FincoEnergies experts, you'll determine how much HVO100 your company needs. Instead of using the fuel directly, we add the total amount of liters to our diesel volume and add it to our Dutch fuel road network. By doing this, you're actively contributing to a more sustainable future.

After an audit carried out by an independent auditor, your company will receive a verified certificate confirming that the HVO100 has been added to the network. It's proof of your sustainable contribution: you can attribute the purchase to your own business activities.

Moreover, says Jim Looise: "Biofuel Swap accelerates the energy transition within transport. An additional advantage is that it increases operational flexibility. Leasing companies, fleet owners and fuel card providers can also benefit from this solution. This reduces emissions within the entire sector."

A unique, tailor-made solution

Managing their sustainability journey is often difficult for transporters with subcontractors or charters. Arranging the administration takes time and effort, and the product must also be available and of good quality, which is not always easy without a good (international) network. Using FincoEnergies Biofuel Swap, companies gain more control over their sustainability.

"More and more companies are demanding that the CO2 reduction per batch of HVO is demonstrable and do not want standard figures. We can allocate specific CO2 reductions tailored to the customer with Biofuel Swap."

Successful pilot

The launch of Biofuel Swap follows a successful pilot with PostNL in the summer of 2023. Via Biofuel Swap, 25,000 liters of HVO were integrated into the company, leading to an impressive reduction of approximately 70 tonnes of CO2e emissions.

Rutger Vonk, ESG Programme Manager at Spring GDS (part of the PostNL Group), recently summarised the pilot concisely: "This delivers the same reduction results as if our trucks were to run entirely on HVO100."

What's next?

FincoEnergies has big plans for Biofuel Swap. We are going to expand this solution to our existing customer base so that more companies can make their transport activities more sustainable. Using HVO is not only sustainable and good for reducing CO2, but it is also commercially smart, says Looise.

"As a transport company, you can set yourself apart by showcasing the benefits of HVO to your customers. Biofuel Swap also simplifies the process of creating a sustainability plan that aligns with your company's ambitions. For those without direct access to HVO100, Biofuel Swap offers an excellent alternative to boost sustainability efforts."

What’s next? Conquering Europe, of course – liter by liter, starting with our neighbouring countries. Because the more we decarbonise, the brighter the future.
